Green Schools Day of Action:
Calvin Jones, from the Heritage in Schools Scheme, spent the day in Walterstown school on Thursday 5th March. He went to each classroom and spoke to the children about biodiversity. He then brought each class out and about to explore biodiversity in the context of the school and its immediate surroundings.
Classes were split into groups for the outdoor part of each session. The groups were given a worksheet which was designed to help pupils focus on finding the different groups of plants and animals in and around the school (crustaceans, molluscs, amphibians, mammals, arachnids, insects, birds, plants). The older children had to think about where each type of plant or animal lives (the habitat), what conditions it needs and what threats it faces, etc.
It was a very interesting and informative day and the children had fun exploring the theme of biodiversity outdoors.
