Second Class 2022/2023

It has been a busy first term for Second Class this year. Since returning from midterm break, they have been learning all about data in maths. They walked around the school collecting information and making tally charts. They have been working hard learning about magnets, reading on the school iPads, doing winter chalk art and playing hockey for P.E.

This week Second Class presented their first ever school projects! It was very exciting to research all about animals and every child spoke with confidence when showing-off their hard work. The class heard a lot of interesting facts about a variety of animals.

Attention has now turned to learning songs for the upcoming Christmas Concert. Everyone is looking forward to having a live audience this year and cannot wait to take to the stage in December!

Autumn Nature Walk 🍂 🍁

2nd and 3rd class both enjoyed a nature walk with Bean Uí Riain this the week! They went on a tree hunt, searching for Irish native trees and their leaves. The children collected many fruits and seeds, some of which will be planted in the school garden in the coming weeks.

Everyone had a great time observing nature at work. It was lovely to see evidence of the changing season all around the countryside!

Flag Day 2022

Walterstown NS held “Flag Day” yesterday to celebrate the awarding of three flags that we successfully earned this year. Our school was very proud of this huge achievement!

WNS were awarded the:

  • Green Flag
  • Active Flag
  • Amber Flag

The whole school community worked very hard to meet the criteria for each of the above flags. We held a whole school assembly on the yard – the first time we were able to do this in a long time! Members of the Green, Active and Amber Flag Committees spoke before each flag was raised to a rounding applause!

Afterwards, the Parents’ Association kindly organised a visit from the ice-cream van to celebrate the amazing achievement. Everyone was delighted with their ice-cream/slushie!

Well done to all involved!

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to our wonderful 2nd Class pupils who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday. They were blessed with fabulous weather for the big day!

Thanks to the staff and families for preparing them and to Fr. Tom for a beautiful ceremony. A special thanks to the parents of 1st Class & the Parents Association for organising and preparing the party back at school.

Well done to all involved!

Fire Safety with Cobh Fire Station

David and Paul from Cobh Fire Brigade visited Walterstown NS last Thursday. They gave a very informative fire safety presentation in the halla, before allowing each class the opportunity to explore their fire truck.

The children really enjoyed sitting in the fire truck and learning about all the different equipment and fire safety clothing fire-fighters use.

A big thanks to David and Paul for taking the time to visit our school and providing us with the skills and knowledge to remain safe in any fire emergency!
