Calvin Jones – School Wildlife Safari

There was great excitement in the school on Tuesday when we had our first visitor since the beginning of the pandemic!

We were delighted to welcome Calvin Jones to Walterstown National School. Calvin, Founder and Managing Editor of Ireland’s Wildlife, is a Natural History Heritage Specialist on the wonderful “Heritage in Schools Scheme”.

Calvin brought some lucky classes outside to the field to take part in a “School Wildlife Safari”. Each class got an insight into local wildlife and got an opportunity to explore the school surroundings on the search for plants, insects, birds, amphibians and mammals. Calvin’s safari gave our students the freedom to indulge their innate curiosity and reconnect with nature on their own terms.

Everyone had great fun exploring and learned a lot about the wildlife of Ireland, particularly the wildlife in our own local area.

A huge thanks to Calvin for taking the time to visit Walterstown and sharing his passion for the natural world with us!

Be sure to take a look below at some of the pictures from our wildlife safari!

u12 County Camogie Final

Huge Congratulations to the Cobh Camogie U12 ‘Yellow’ team on winning the County Final on Sunday against a very tough Na Piarsaigh side.

The match was won after extra-time and a great performance was put in by all.

Some of our current and past pupils were involved in the game. Congratulations to 5th and 6th class pupils Abby, Eve and Mollie. We are very proud of you all!

Active Week 2021

We had a very successful “Active Week” in Walterstown last week. There were activities everyday, including dancing, a summer walk, and a skipathon. There was something for everyone! We had a fantastic time keeping fit throughout the week.

Our week ended with an amazing “Sports Day”. There were 16 stations and we were so lucky to have great weather. The highlights of the day were the bouncing castle obstacle course and the arrival of the ice-cream van.

Thank you to Ms. O’Rourke and Ms. Jennings for organising and managing the week so well!

Operation Plant Donation

There was a huge response to our plant donation initiative! A big thank you to everyone for your generous donations of plants and money.

Everything we received on Friday will be put to good use in the school garden!

Thank you to Brad and Bean Uí Riain for organising and managing the event so well.

We Are All Unique Day

This Friday to celebrate how “We Are All Unique” we are encouraging all children to dress up in bright clothes and colourful socks and hats.

We look forward to having a school full of colour where diversity is celebrated.
