Maths Week 2023
This week was Maths Week in Walterstown National School. Target boards, mental maths challenges, table challenges, iPad maths apps, board games and card games were just some of the resources used to create maths games and activities! We held a brain teaser competition and the winners from each class collected their prizes from the hall on Friday! All the pupils in Walterstown National School thoroughly enjoyed Maths Week 2023!

Collecting their certs and prizes! Well done everybody!
First Class
First class have been keeping busy this term. They have been drawing scarecrows, studying the artwork of David Hockney, working on their collective nouns and enjoying nature walks when the weather is dry. They have used the iPads to illustrate Irish myths and legends and have been working hard on their tables and spellings.
The pupils have been singing pop songs, reading in the Cúinne Scéalaíochta and playing games during P.E.
They have been learning how to do cursive handwriting and each day the best handwriter in the class has a chance to sit at the Bord Scríobhnóireachta!
In preparation for Halloween the pupils made spooky skeletons which can be seen hanging on their classroom door!
Walk to School Week
This week was Walk to School Week. Well done to all our wonderful pupils who made a big effort to walk and park and stride to school this week. Classes also designed their own runners, drew their journey to school, blinged their runners, went on class walks and made ads and movies to raise awareness about sustainable travel.

Senior Infants
Since returning to school four weeks ago we have been very busy in senior infants! We have been enjoying some role play for our Aistear theme “The School”. Autumn is such a great season for colourful art. Using oranges, reds, yellows and browns we have made autumn wreaths. We also have a new addition to Aistear this year – a sand pit! It is proving to be very popular for messy play! We have also learned a new poem called “Smile”.
Junior Infants
Junior Infants have settled very well into big school. They are making new friends and are working hard. They have been busy every morning working on their fine motor skills and had so much fun exploring on their tour around the school. They were learning about colours in maths and made beautiful family portraits in art. Ms. Dineen and “Buddy Bear” are very proud of all the boys and girls!
School Reopening Times
As the summer break comes to an end, we’re excited to extend a heartfelt welcome back to Walterstown NS for the upcoming school year!

“The Great Wave”
As part of Creative Schools we recreated a famous painting – “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Hokusai. Our artwork, “The Great Wave”, was made from tiles which we broke into tiny pieces to create a beautiful mosaic effect.
Each child in the school stuck a tile onto the artwork representing the inclusive nature of art in our school.
“The Great Wave” is hanging in our school hall for everyone to enjoy, appreciate and interpret whatever way they wish!
Sports Day 2023
We had a very successful sports day in Walterstown National School this year. The pupils took part in a wide range of activities in the sunshine including a bouncy castle! A special thank you to the Parents Association who organised an ice cream truck which came to the school – a well earned treat at the end of a fantastic day!
